Tomsk regional Museum of local lore

In 1911, the authorities of Tomsk decided to open The regional Siberian scientific and art Museum. Alexander II and determined the place for the construction of the Museum building. Implementation of the plan was interrupted by military and revolutionary events (1914-1919). 14.02.1920 after inspection of the Bishop's house (the former estate of the Ashman I. D. Astashev) the Commission made the decision on opening in it "the Museum of antiquity and revolution". Ways of creation of Museum funds were various. Intelligent, highly educated artists, architects, University professors bit by bit collected scattered war and revolution objects that had artistic and historical value. The first exposition of the Museum was opened on 18.03.1922. Only in October 1922 the Museum received the name “Tomsk regional Museum " corresponding to the direction of its work. ( Subsequent names of the Museum: 1940-1946. Tomsk city Museum of local lore; since 1946 Tomsk regional Museum of local lore.) The main tasks of the Museum were and are the study of the Tomsk region and education of the population. The formation of Museum collections is due to a comprehensive study of the indigenous population of Western Siberia in the interaction of Museum staff and scientists of TSU and TSPU. The Museum's collections correspond to its local history profile. The Museum exhibits its own and imported exhibitions, conducts interactive programs for different age audiences on the materials of exhibitions and collections.
